Loveland Newborn Photographer | In-Home Lifestyle Newborn Session faq

As a Loveland newborn photographer, there are a handful of questions that almost every new parent asks when they start thinking about newborn photos:

“What if my baby doesn’t sleep?”
“What if my baby cries the whole time?”
“What do we even need to do to prepare?”
“What if our home isn’t ‘photo ready’?”

If you’re wondering any of these things, you’re very much not alone. Lifestyle newborn photography is designed specifically for real life with a new baby—unpredictable, slow, tender, and completely different from anything you can fully plan ahead of time.

Below are some of the most common questions I get about in-home newborn sessions.

Does my baby need to be asleep for newborn photos?

No! Sleep is absolutely not required to capture beautiful newborn images. In fact, some of my favorite images are of babies gazing up at his/her parents.

Lifestyle newborn sessions are built around your baby as they are—awake, sleepy, feeding, being held, or needing comfort. Every version is completely normal and photographable.

Some of the most meaningful images often come from quiet, alert moments where your baby is simply being held close.

What if my baby cries during the session?

This is one of the biggest worries parents have, and it’s completely understandable. But newborn sessions are designed with this in mind. Crying, feeding breaks, diaper changes, soothing—these are all part of the natural rhythm of the session. Nothing needs to be paused or “fixed” before we continue.

We slow down as needed and follow your baby’s cues the entire time. There is no pressure for your baby to behave a certain way.

What should we do to prepare for an in-home newborn session?

Very little.

Your home does not need to be perfect, styled, or ready for guests in a specific way.

We typically use just a few rooms with the best natural light. That might be your bedroom, living room, or nursery—wherever feels most comfortable.

Simple tidying is helpful, but there is no expectation for deep cleaning or staging your space.

The focus is on connection, not perfection.

How long does a newborn session take?

Most in-home newborn sessions last around 1.5 hours, depending on your baby. But the pace is completely flexible. There is time built in for feeding, soothing, changing, and simply pausing when needed.

Nothing is rushed, and there is no strict timeline we are trying to stay inside of.

When is the best time to do newborn photos?

Newborn sessions are typically done within the first two weeks after birth, but there is no strict cutoff.

The “best” time is really whenever you feel ready.

Every stage in those early weeks has something meaningful to document—whether your baby is very new or a little more alert and expressive.
