What to Expect at a Maternity Photoshoot With a Toddler in Fort Collins
As a Fort Collins maternity photographer (and a mom myself), I can tell you that your toddler doesn't need to be perfectly behaved for us to create beautiful images. In fact, some of my favorite maternity photos happen when toddlers are simply being themselves.
your Toddler Doesn't Need to Perform
One of the biggest misconceptions about family and maternity photography is that children need to smile at the camera and follow directions the entire time.
Most toddlers aren't interested in that—and honestly, that's okay.
Rather than expecting young children to pose perfectly, I approach sessions with flexibility and play. We might explore a trail, pick up sticks, look for rocks, or take breaks when needed.
The goal isn't perfect behavior.
The goal is connection.
When your toddler cuddles into your side, reaches for your hand, or gives your belly a spontaneous hug, those moments often become the images families treasure most.
Expect Movement (And That's a Good Thing)
Toddlers are naturally curious and active. Instead of fighting that energy, I build sessions around it.
We'll walk, play, and give your child opportunities to move around. Sometimes the best photographs happen between poses—when everyone relaxes and simply enjoys being together.
If your toddler wants to run ahead on a trail or stop to investigate every flower, that's often part of the story we're documenting. Years from now, you'll remember what this season of life actually felt like.
A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way
You don't need to do much to prepare, but a few simple things can help your session feel smoother:
Bring a favorite snack and water.
Avoid putting pressure on your child to smile or "behave”.
Talk about the session as a fun family outing rather than a performance.
Pack comfort items if they're in a clingy phase.
The less pressure everyone feels, the more relaxed the session tends to be.
This Season Deserves to Be Remembered
There's something incredibly special about the months before a new baby arrives. Your toddler is still your baby, but they're also about to become a big sibling. Maternity photos with a toddler capture more than a pregnancy. They document the unique chapter between one season of your family and the next. It's a brief window of time that passes surprisingly quickly.
Planning a Maternity Session in Fort Collins?
If you're expecting a baby and wondering whether your toddler can handle a maternity session, the answer is almost certainly yes.
My sessions are designed to be relaxed, child-friendly, and focused on connection rather than perfection.
I'd love to help you document this season before your newest family member arrives.
