In Northern Colorado, fall color is stunning but relatively short. Peak foliage around Cache la Poudre River and the nearby foothills usually happens between late September and mid-October.

That means photographers only have a small window of ideal dates.

Add in school schedules, sports activities, and families hoping to have photos ready for holiday cards, and those few weekends fill up very quickly. Many photographers release their fall calendars months in advance.

If you're hoping to schedule fall family photos in Fort Collins, the best time to book is typically mid-August or late summer, when families are starting to think about back-to-school and fall is right around the corner. Many families in Fort Collins begin planning their fall family photo sessions around this time so they can secure a spot before the busiest weekends fill up. By the beginning of September, many of the most popular fall dates are already reserved.

If you’re hoping for mini sessions, planning ahead is especially important. Mini sessions take place on a specific day and have a limited number of spots. Last year, I had to turn down several wonderful families who reached out a week or two before my fall mini sessions. I truly wish I could have fit them in, but by that point every spot was already booked. Fall is such a special time for family photos, and it’s always disappointing to have to say no when families were excited and ready to book.

Peak fall color around Fort Collins usually appears between late September and mid-October, although it can vary slightly depending on the weather each year. Areas along the Cache la Poudre River and nearby foothill trails often show beautiful golden cottonwoods and warm autumn tones during this time, creating a gorgeous natural backdrop for family photos.

Mountain areas, like Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park often peak around mid-late September. Aspens are beautiful and vibrant in these areas, but they last 7-10 days, so snagging a peak spot for these requires planning ahead.
