Fort Collins Family Photography: Finding the Session That Fits Your Family
When families reach out looking for a Fort Collins family photographer, one of the first questions they ask is: “Should we book a mini session or a full session?”
And the honest answer is — it depends on your family.
Not on trends. Not on what other families do. Not even on which option is “better.” It depends on your kids. Your energy. Your season of life.
Here’s what I mean.
the Mini Session experience
Mini sessions in Northern Colorado are held on a predetermined date at a location chosen by your photographer. They’re typically about 15–20 minutes long and scheduled back-to-back with multiple families.
They’re simple. Efficient. Focused.
You show up, we jump right in, we capture connection — and before you know it, you’re done.
For some families, this works perfectly.
If your child runs into the space ready to talk, smile, and engage…
If they love being the center of attention…
If they warm up instantly and don’t need time to observe first…
A mini session can feel joyful and effortless.
For a family of three especially, a mini session can absolutely be enough to create meaningful, frame-worthy images.
The Full Family Session Experience
A full family session in Fort Collins is different from the start.
Instead of a set date and location, we plan it together. We talk about your vision. Maybe you imagine tall grasses at golden hour. Maybe foothills views. Maybe a favorite local park where your children can run freely.
Full sessions typically last 45–60 minutes — and that time changes everything.
Space allows for:
A shy child to warm up naturally
Greater variety of poses, angles, and backgrounds
Capturing quiet, intimate moments in addition to big laughter and fun-filled shots
Larger and smaller group breakouts
Pauses for snacks or breaks
Sometimes the most genuine smiles happen 25 minutes in — after the nerves settle and everyone forgets they’re being photographed.
Full sessions tend to feel more relaxed, organic, and flexible. There’s room to breathe, to wander, and to capture your family in multiple ways — from candid playful moments to classic portraits, with backgrounds that change naturally as we explore.
So… Which Is Right for Your Family?
Mini sessions are ideal if:
Your kids are outgoing and camera-ready
You’re happy with a pre-selected Northern Colorado location
You want a short, focused experience
You only need a handful of updated images
Full family sessions are ideal if:
Your children need time to warm up
You want input in choosing the location
You’d like more variety in poses and backgrounds
You value candid, unhurried moments
You want flexibility to follow your family’s natural rhythm
Ready to Decide Which Session Is Right for Your Family?
Whether you choose a mini session or a full family session, the most important thing is capturing real connection and memories you’ll cherish for years to come.
